{UNIVERSITY outreach PROGRAMS}

The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults was founded in a dorm room at Brown University in 1997. At 19, Doug Ulman was diagnosed with cancer. Frustrated by the lack of support programs or literature directed at the needs of young adults affected by cancer, Doug and his family created the Ulman Cancer Fund For Young Adults (UCF) to fill the void that exists in health care services.

Over a decade later, we're excited to maintain our commitment to college students and college campuses nationwide through our University Outreach Program.  Focusing on efforts at schools in the Mid-Atlantic Region, we're developing a model program that can be replicated in other parts of the country and will ensure no college student diagnosed with cancer is alone.  Through the multi-prong approach outlined below we are educating, engaging and empowering young adult students on college campuses to join the young adult cancer fight and providing them with resources necessary to thrive when facing the disease.

The UCF University Outreach Program Model consists of the following components:

  • College Scholarship(s) for young adult(s) attending that University
  • A student run on-campus outreach effort and young adult support group
  • A Young Adult Patient Navigation Program at the University's Cancer Center or affiliated cancer treatment facility

UCF is currently piloting its University Outreach Program at the University of Maryland with plans for additional expansion to other campuses in the Mid-Atlantic including The University of Virginia and The George Washington University.
