Who do we support?

"'Cancer Survivors' refers to those people who have been diagnosed with cancer and the people in their lives who are affected by their diagnosis, including family members, friends, and caregivers."
- National Action Plan on Cancer Survivorship

In dealing with his illness, Doug and his family quickly learned that cancer affects young adults in a unique way. In the natural course of life, young adults go forth with optimism, idealism, and a belief that they are indestructible. When they are robbed of that special perspective because of a life threatening disease, they have a particularly difficult adjustment to make. There are issues that are very specific to young adults dealing with cancer, such as practical and emotional issues of independence, insurance and finances, fertility, dating and intimacy, interruption of education and/or career, and loss of optimism and hope.

The Ulman Cancer Fund For Young Adults support programs embrace both cancer survivors and their families and friends. We've adopted the definition used in the Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention and Lance Armstrong Foundation's recently released National Action Plan on Cancer Survivorship.

We believe a cancer survivor is anyone who is living with, through, and beyond cancer. We welcome cancer survivors who are experiencing young adult specific issues associated with their cancer diagnosis, treatment, or survivorship. We define young adults to fall between the ages of 18-35.

"I was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer at age 20. I felt alone and scared until I found the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults."

"This website is awesome! Finally someone is addressing the needs of a population which seems to be overlooked. I have recently completed treatment for Leukemia. At 22 when I was diagnosed, I realized there are vitrually no programs available for young adults. So I thank you, and applaud you. Stay well."
