Stephen Hersey
Interim 4k for cancer Program Coordinator
Stephen serves as the Interim Program Coordinator for the UCF’s 4K for Cancer program. He is responsible for recruitment, registration, training, growing, and management for the 4K for Cancer. As an alumni of the 4K for Cancer’s 2011 Baltimore to Portland ride, he was able to experience the direct benefits that this program can offer to those in the fight against cancer. He hopes to continue the growth of the 4K for Cancer so that the program can better accomplish its mission of empowering young adults in the fight against cancer. Stephen received a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and currently lives in Baltimore neighborhood of Canton with his girlfriend Kelsey.
1) HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED WITH the UCF?
When I was seventeen, my girlfriend was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. I was able to see first hand the strength needed to fight through a diagnosis’s and subsequent treatment. Having gone through this with my girlfriend Kelsey, I can now appreciate and understand the profoundness of the impact which programs like the 4K for Cancer and organizations like the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults have on the lives of everyone involved.
2) OUTSIDE OF WORKING AT UCF, WHAT’S YOUR DREAM JOB?
My dream job would be an Australian clam fisherman (ACF). Unfortunately, due to the changing climate, a rise in the price of oil, and the current economic downturn, this career will have to remain a dream. Fortunately, working as an Australian clam fisherman and working at UCF both allow me to work in a mission focused, productive, and rewarding environment.
3) WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT WORKING AT UCF?
Outside of my daily interactions with UCF staff and volunteers, the most memorable moment occurred last may. Before embarking on my cross-country bicycle ride for the 4K, Brock encouraged us to “always remember why” we were riding. This simple phrase was and continues to remind me to think of all the good our efforts accomplish.
4) WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?
While not at work, I like to fill my time training for various endurance events or out sailing on Baltimore’ s harbor. I also enjoy spending time going to events in Baltimore and the surrounding area with friends.
